Meeting the challenges of post-stroke brain repair
The non-regenerative capability of the brain has been challenged in recent years by increasing evidence of spontaneous remodelling in stroke patients.
This capacity is of particular importance for future therapeutic strategies. On the one hand, ischemia mobilizes the neurogenic areas of the adult brain to repopulate depleted regions, and stimulates the formation of new blood vessels. On the other hand, an impressive amount of data obtained in the 80’s and 90’s have proven that the adult brain is able to remodel its circuitry in response to the presence of exogenous neural progenitors, and to integrate new neurons.
Our expectations are to define new therapeutic approaches for stroke based on stem cells, on the basis of a better understanding of the mechanisms of post-stroke plasticity.
Looking forward to meeting you in Lille !
